In both 2000 and 2001 the Kokkalis Foundation sponsored the Halki International Seminars, an educational program for young leaders organised by the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). Held annually since 1990, the Halki Seminars have brought together more than 800 young scientists, researchers, journalists, politicians, and diplomats from over 50 countries. The primary goal of the Halki Seminars is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences among potential young leaders in the region and to offer training packages on European integration and on the construction of strong civil society organisations. As a core component of ELIAMEP’s educational activities, the Halki International Seminars have succeeded in developing a network of young leaders from Southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the European Union, and the United States. In addition to the Kokkalis Foundation, recent co-sponsors of the Halki Seminars have included the European Commission, NATO, the E.U. Institute for Security Studies, the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Soros Foundation, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
